India has reported 841 new cases of COVID-19, marking the highest daily count in 227 days, as per the health ministry’s update on Sunday. The number of active cases stands at 4,309. Over the past 24 hours, three new Covid-related fatalities were reported—one each from Kerala, Karnataka, and Bihar.
This surge in daily cases comes after a prolonged period of double-digit daily counts, which had persisted until December 5. The recent increase is attributed to the emergence of a new variant and colder weather conditions. India had last recorded 865 new cases on May 19.
During the peak of the pandemic in early 2020, daily case numbers had reached into the lakhs. Over the course of about four years, more than 4.5 crore people have been infected, resulting in over 5.3 lakh deaths across the country.
The ministry’s website reports that over 4.4 crore individuals have recovered from the disease, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81%. Additionally, the country has administered 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines, according to the website.
